Here we go-the topic no one wants to talk about, LICE...

School is starting back soon so this is a good time to learn some facts about Lice.

There are some common misconceptions about Head Lice. Lice do not have wings, therefore they do NOT fly! They cannot jump. But they do crawl fast!

Lice are yellow-white in color and about the size of a sesame seed. And are sometimes mistaken for dandruff or hair spray build up. The most common symptom of head lice is itching. Itching is an allergic reaction to the louse's saliva. Some people aren't allergic and do not get the itch.

Lice need human blood to survive. At most, they can survive without a host for 24-48 hours. Head Lice usually live up to 30 days on a host but they multiply quickly! They spread through head to head contact. Lice can be transmitted through contaminated clothing or hair accessories. It is possible Lice can spread through furniture but not as likely. Head Lice will not infest your home the way bed bugs or fleas do. They do not carry diseases or live on pets.

A louse can hold its breath for up to 8 hours, although I'm not sure why that would be necessary.

Some recent studies show that Lice are becoming resistant to the chemicals and pesticides found in over the counter treatments. But some home remedies such as mayonnaise, margarine, vinegar and olive oil have not been proven as effective either.

Head Lice will not go away on their own. If you think you or your child has Lice, check with your Doctor to confirm and see what steps you should take. Notify your child's school and/or daycare. Check others living in the household and treat everyone who is infected at the same time.
